AD1 Timberdoodle Trek                        7pm – on  No fee

Join Alan Mapes for an evening walk to look and listen for American Woodcock, Eastern Screech-Owls and Great Horned Owls. We will listen for the peent, whinny and hoot of these birds of the evening.   It is time for the woodcock’s sky-dance mating flight and we’ll hope to see and hear this wonderful, weird ritual.  Meet at the entrance to the 5 Rivers Visitor’s Center at 7pm

AD2 - Amphibian Walk                         9am – 12pm
   No fee

The Workshop Land has one of the richest diversities of amphibians in New York State. Join Al Breisch, co-author of Amphibians and Reptiles of New York State: Identification, Natural History and Conservation, as we explore the streams and woodlands on the Land to see how many salamanders, frogs and toads we can find and learn about their interesting life histories.

AD3 - Birding & Brunch                        7am – 10:30am   $10.00

It’s spring at last! What better way to celebrate this season of new beginnings than with an early morning bird walk with Mike Matthews! Join in the adventure as we look for and listen to birds as they migrate, mate and establish territories. Finish the morning off with a delicious al fresco brunch!  Bring your binoculars along!

AD4 - Spring Wildflower Walk                9am – 12pm        No fee

What's up in the woods? May wildflowers! The Heldeberg Land is especially rich in wildflowers, and you can bring your camera along to capture their beauty. You will learn the ecology of these wildflowers and their rich plant lore. You may bring a wildflower field guide, water, snack and perhaps a walking stick.

AD5 - Starting Your Garden Up            9am – 12pm     $5.00

Come to the Workshop and learn how to grow your own vegetables!  This class will teach you to how to establish your own garden for the 2010 growing season! In this first session, you will learn soil preparation, seed choices, seeding, transplanting, succession planting, fertilizing, and harvesting of crops. Each attendee will create a growing plan for the season from the start of purchasing seeds to the closing of their gardens. Please bring gloves, appropriate clothing, and a hoe if you have one. Families are welcome!

Saturday, June 12th

AD 6 - Fern Foray                              9am – 12pm       No fee

The talus slopes, limestone cliffs, boulders, and wetlands of the Heldeberg Escarpment contain a rich diversity of ferns, club mosses and flowering plants often confused with ferns.  Explore the Land with Al Breisch learning what makes a fern a fern, while searching for spleenworts, Maidenhair, Walking Fern and other non-flowering plants.

AD 7 - Critter Patrol Snake Walk       9am – 12pm      No fee

 There are 17 species of snakes in New York State and some of them live at the Heldeberg Workshop!  Come and experience the fun of searching and finding snakes on the Land. We'll discuss snake habitat and behavior as well. Thin gloves are useful. Open to all ages and families.

AD 8 - Geology Walk: Up Close & Personal  9am – 12pm No fee                                                          

The Heldeberg Workshop sits at the base of the Helderberg Escarpment, a geologist’s paradise.  We’ll carpool from the Workshop to the Indian Ladder Trail. We’ll discuss how the escarpment was formed and geological processes like erosion. Sturdy footwear, water and a walking stick are strongly recommended!

AD 9 - Basket Making     10am  – 2pm  $10.00 + $10.00 materials fee

Using your imagination, you can create unique baskets and start a wonderful new hobby!  We’ll start with basic weaving of spoked and twined baskets. We’ll explore a variety of materials that can be used to fashion planter baskets, melon baskets or even Appalachian egg baskets.  Experienced basket weavers are welcome too!  Please bring water and lunch.

AD10 - Clay Workshop 1: Handbuilding, Pottery Wheel & Stamping with Colleen Skiff  9am – 12pm   $25.00 + $15.00 materials fee                      

We are offering a 2-class workshop and you may take either or both classes. In this first class, you will learn basic building methods for clay, including how to throw a pot on a wheel.  Sample projects will be on display and instructions given on each. You can borrow ideas from samples projects on display, or construct projects of your own choosing. Completed projects will be air dried and reading for finishing in the second workshop.  If you are not taking the second workshop, you may pick up your kiln fired projects on July 31.st The materials fee includes 15 pounds of clay, and one firing.

AD 11 - Trouble Shooting Your Garden    9am – 12pm       $5.00


You learned how to Start Your Garden Up earlier in the spring. We will talk about our gardening experiences and troubleshoot solutions to difficulties that have arisen during the growing season. Families and first time attendees are welcome!

AD12 - Spelunking                            9am – 1pm        No fee

Does your Bucket List include going caving? Well, here’s your chance! Explore a cave with local writer, geologist and caving enthusiast Dr. Michael Nardacci! This is sure to be a fascinating and mind expanding experience.  Bring three (3) light sources, wear warm clothing (jeans, sweatshirt or flannel shirt), boots or sneakers and work gloves.  Helmets will be provided.
  Bring a lunch and a change of clothing.

AD13 - Learn to Knit Fingerless Gloves     9am – 12pm       
No fee

Are you tired of making scarves and yearn for a more challenging project? If you know how to knit and purl, then you can make a pair of fingerless gloves!   Join us on the Land as we start this fun and easy project.  You will be provided with a materials list before class.

AD14 - Clay Workshop II: Surface Decoration with Colleen Skiff 
9am – 12pm 
    $25 + $15 materials fee

This is the second of the clay workshops. Participants who took the first workshop will learn about a variety of low fired glazes and how to apply them. Painting methods will be demonstrated, as well as carving, piercing, stenciling and wax resist techniques. Engobes (colored slips) may be used with graffito (scratching to unveil the under layer of clay.)  We'll use the saw dust kiln on the land to produce works with a smoky finish. All work will be ready for pick up by August 7.
